QUEENS, N.Y. — All 16 members of a church-sponsored mercy mission who were just miles outside Port-au-Prince when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked the Haitian capital, leveling buildings and leaving thousands dead, landed safely at John F. Kennedy International Airport early this morning.

The Warren County church members, who left Saturday to bring medical supplies to a children’s hospital in the capital city, were greeted by a throng of ecstatic friends and relatives, who drove 75 miles from northwestern New Jersey to JFK for the tearful reunion.

“I’m just excited because we hadn’t heard from them at all for about 24 hours,” said Jori Procaccini, who was crying as she greeted her father, Frank, a 55-year-old member of the congregation.

This morning’s dramatic return home marked the end of a long week for the fearful relatives of some New Jersey residents who were overseas when the violent earthquake struck Tuesday, but the nerve-wracking wait will continue for several N.J. families whose loved ones are unaccounted for.

Shortly after midnight at JFK Airport, “Welcome Home” balloons danced in the air near the Terminal 8 ceilings as family and friends of the Trinity United Methodist Church group waited for the plane to arrive. Dozens of people huddled together and held a 10-foot-long banner reading “Welcome Back Haiti Team, We Love You.”

Dorothy Sommer was thrilled to see her daughter, Kate Stiner, 52, who was part of the church mission.

“I feel so excited and happy and delighted,” Sommer said. “There were moments where we really did not know anything. This was an anxiety-producing time.”

Stiner’s whole family was in attendance — husband Bob, 57, daughter Amy, 16, and another daughter, Becca, 8. Becca was holding a poster of her mother with the words “Welcome Home Kate” and “We Love You!” written around a picture of her mother.

After the earthquake struck in Haiti, the Rev. Frank Fowler, senior pastor of the Hackettstown church, was able to call the worried loved ones to report the group was safe. Later that day, the group was airlifted to the Bahamas by an Icelandic plane that had delivered supplies to Port-au-Prince.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The U.S. Embassy became home for some of the many New Jersey residents stranded in Haiti by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

Lindsay Doran, 19, of Rumson, has been in Haiti as part of an internship program with her college, Lynn University of Boca Raton, Fla.

Doran was reported to be among seven students in the group of 15 today who were able to stay at the U.S. Embassy. Eight others – students and faculty members – are still missing, according to Lindsay’s father, Scott Doran.

“All we know is that they’re safe and they’re secure,” Scott Doran said last night about his daughter.

The Dorans first heard news about their daughter on Tuesday at about 6 p.m. Kaitlin Shea, a childhood friend of Lindsay’s, received a text message from an unknown phone number indicating she was safe.

“K, it’s Lindsay. In Haiti right now. There was a really bad earthquake. I’m OK for right now. Can u please contact my parents,” the text message read, according to Shea.

Scott Doran also said that Lynn University officials have been in continuous contact with them since the disaster. The school has reportedly chartered a team to rescue the student group, who had traveled to Haiti to work with Food for the Poor, a nonprofit agency that ministers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Scott Doran said this was his daughter’s second trip with the agency; She had traveled to Jamaica with them during her freshman year.

“Last year, they visited homeless people, and that’s what they were gonna do in Haiti,” Scott Doran said.

The group — 12 students, two university instructors and a representative from the nonprofit — was supposed to be staying at the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, Shea said, but family and friends have not yet heard how the group was separated.

An Eatontown family were forced to abandon their Tuesday evening flight to Miami after the quake. Kency Germain and his family – five adults and three children – were able to make their way to the U.S. Embassy, where they were allowed to sleep briefly near the entrance.

Referring to their stay before reaching the embassy, Germain said, ““It was safer in there (the airport) than it was out there in Port-au-Prince.”

NEWARK — An unidentified man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the West Ward last night, authorities said.

Police were responding to a report of several shots fired at 357 South Orange Ave. yesterday at 6:02 p.m. when they found the victim bleeding from his stomach and leg from apparent gunshot wounds, according to a statement released by Newark Police Detective Hubert Henderson.

The man, whose identity was not released, was transported to UMDNJ, where he was listed in critical condition, Henderson said.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have no motive or suspects in the shooting, the statement said.

NEWARK — An unidentified man was fatally shot in a Newark building shortly before 10 p.m. today, authorities said.

Newark police responded to a report of a man shot and discovered the man lying in a hallway, according to a statement by Detective Todd McClendon.

The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead, the statement said.

Investigators have not identified a suspect nor a motive for the shooting.

LINDEN — A Linden man’s 11-year-old granddaughter saved his life earlier today by administering CPR on him, authorities said.

The Linden authorities responded to the 300 block of South Stiles Street at about 12:46 p.m. today and found Frank Fulop, 75, who had fallen and had been knocked unconscious, said Deputy Fire Chief John Traub.

Fulop’s wife, whose name was unknown, was unable to reach down to help her husband, who was not breathing, Traub said.

“The initial life-saving breaths were provided by the patient’s granddaughter,” Traub said. “It was a post-holiday gift offered by an 11-year-old.”

Frank Fulop had fallen backwards, down five steps in his home, which caused severe cuts to his head, the deputy fire chief said.

Once the emergency service workers arrived, they took over the CPR, Traub said.

Linden Fire Engine 1, fire ambulance and police responded to the scene, Traub said.

After reviving Fulop, he was moved to Rahway Hospital, he said. Fulop, who was in stable condition, was later transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was expected to stay overnight.

NEWARK — Police are investigating a shooting on Saturday night in Newark, where they believe at least one man was wounded, authorities said.

Newark police responded to a report of a person shot at 51 Chancellor Ave., at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, said Det. Todd McClendon, a spokesman for the city police department.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a white sedan in the driveway with multiple bullet holes, he said. They also found blood inside and outside of the vehicle, but the victim and suspects were gone, he said.

Investigators have not identified the victim, suspects or motive in the shooting; the investigation is ongoing, McClendon said.

Madrit Vlashi, 30, today was arrested by Department of Corrections officers and was charged with making telephonic terroristic threats after he returned on Saturday to a halfway house in East Orange, where he had been living, said Matt Schuman, spokesman for the Department of Corrections. Vlashi had been on a furlough from the Field House, he said.

Vlashi was transferred to East Jersey State Prison this morning after being arrested, Schuman said.

Schuman was unsure whether Vlashi would serve the rest of his sentence at East Jersey State Prison, but said that Vlashi would not be able to return to the halfway house.

Hawthorne police could not provide more information on the incident.

Vlashi, was scheduled to be eligible for parole in January, according to the Department of Corrections website.

NEWARK — An man suffered multiple gunshot wounds in a shooting tonight, according Newark Police Department.

Police responded to reports of a shooting around 9:30 p.m. on S. 11th St., police said. The victim was accosted by two unidentified suspects who shot him and fled the scene on foot, police said.

The Major Crimes Unit’s investigation is ongoing, and police did not release the motive for the shooting nor identified a suspect.

The Upper Deerfield Fire Department responded to a fire at 170 Rosenhayn Ave. about 8:55 p.m. tonight, said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a spokesman for the State Police. An unidentified woman, described to be in her 70s, was rescued from the home and transported to a local burn center in Chester, Penn., Castellanos said.

The township fire department is securing the scene this evening, he said. The state’s arson-bomb unit will be assisting in the investigation and is scheduled to arrive Monday morning.

Authorities are not sure what started the fire, or if the cause was arson.
